Trinity’s defense is one of the best in the country, led by senior linebacker Jack Dingle, a Cincinnati commit. Expect the Shamrocks’ defense to look as dominant as they did in their 44-7 season opening win over Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) on Friday against in-state foe Male.

There are high school football rivalries in Kentucky with more history, more hatred, but nothing can top Male-Trinity when it comes to significance in the state’s biggest class.

The schools have combined to win the past six Class 6A state championships, with the Shamrocks taking the titles in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019 and the Bulldogs winning in 2015 and 2018.

Male holds a 6-4 edge in the rivalry since 2014, but Trinity coach Bob Beatty said none of that history will matter when the teams meet again Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Trinity.

Trinity (1-0) is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press Class 6A poll and No. 12 in the nation by USA Today. Male (0-0) is tied for No. 2 in the AP 6A rankings.

Knowing his team has faced Trinity in the playoffs five of the past seven years, Male coach Chris Wolfe knows Friday’s meeting likely won’t be the most important between the schools this season.

Schutte gets nod as Male quarterback

After Saturday’s scrimmage loss to Ballard, Wolfe chose junior Nic Schutte to be his starting quarterback against Trinity. Junior Chad Carroll and sophomore Lucas Cobler also were in contention and could see action at quarterback against the Shamrocks.

Schutte was in line to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Elijah Parish last season but suffered a broken collarbone in a preseason scrimmage. He returned late in the season as a punter, including in the 28-6 loss to Trinity in the state final.

Wolfe said Schutte has a solid arm and a strong understanding of the offense. But the coach knows he’s facing a tough task Friday as Male breaks in four new starters on the offensive line against a stout Trinity defense.

Trinity defense stout

With eight starters back from last year’s championship team, Trinity’s defense was expected to be outstanding this season and got off to a solid start Friday.

The Shamrocks allowed just 119 total yards (92 passing, 27 rushing) in their 44-7 victory over Cincinnati Moeller. The majority of those yards came on a 75-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter after Trinity had taken a 44-0 lead.

Beatty said before the season that his three-man line of DeAnthony Perry, Alton Jefferson and Cole Johnson will be the key to the defensive unit.

Male’s defense also solid

Trinity’s defense is full of Division I prospects, but don’t overlook Male’s defense.

The Bulldogs have elite talent at all three levels, with junior Selah Brown (50 tackles, nine sacks in 2019) on the line, junior Elijah Manning (74 tackles, eight tackles for loss) at middle linebacker and senior cornerback Nick Coates (64 tackles, two interceptions) and junior safety Romel Sheffield (48 tackles, three interceptions) in the secondary.

Brown (6-3, 263 pounds) — who has scholarship offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Missouri, Purdue, Stanford, Tennessee and West Virginia – was one of four defensive linemen who missed Saturday’s scrimmage against Ballard. Wolfe said three of those four, including Brown, are expected to play against Trinity.
