The defendant, whose name has not been released to the public, is accused of killing Eggleston, who was pregnant at the time of her disappearance. Her body was found in a wooded area in Baltimore County in April 2018, nearly a year after she went missing.

According to prosecutors, the defendant was the last person seen with Eggleston before she disappeared. They allege he killed her and disposed of her body to cover up the crime.

The trial is expected to last several weeks, and the prosecution is expected to call several witnesses to testify, including friends and family members of Eggleston and law enforcement officials involved in the investigation.

Eggleston’s disappearance and murder have been the subject of intense media scrutiny in Baltimore, and her family has been vocal in their demand for justice. In a statement released to the press, Eggleston’s mother expressed her hope that the trial would bring closure to their family.

“We have been waiting for this day for a long time, and we are hopeful that justice will finally be served for Akia,” she said. “We miss her every day, and we will never forget her. We want to see the person responsible for her death held accountable.”

The defendant has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, and his defense team has argued that no direct evidence links him to Eggleston’s murder. They have also questioned the reliability of some witnesses expected to testify in the case.

The trial is being closely watched by legal experts and community members, who say it highlights the ongoing problem of domestic violence in Baltimore and the need for more excellent resources to support victims and their families.

As the trial continues, the Eggleston family and their supporters are expected to hold vigils and demonstrations outside the courthouse to demand justice for Akia and other victims of domestic violence.
