A Baltimore woman had a terrifying experience early Saturday morning when she found herself face-to-face with an armed carjacker.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, had just gotten off work from her late night shift at a local hospital and was walking to her car in the parking lot around 1:45 AM. As she approached her vehicle, a man suddenly jumped out from behind a large van parked beside her. He was wearing all dark clothing and a mask covered his face.

In his right hand he held a black semi-automatic handgun which was pointed directly at the woman. “Give me your keys and get out of here now!” the man shouted at her in a gruff voice. The woman froze in fear, paralyzed by the sight of the gun only a few feet away from her. For several terrifying seconds, she stood motionless, unable to process what was happening.

The man grew impatient and yelled again, louder this time, “I said give me your fucking keys!” He cocked the gun back, preparing to fire. That’s when adrenaline kicked in and the woman was able to think quickly. Slowly, with her hands up, she took her key fob out of her purse and gently tossed it towards the man, saying “Please, just take it and leave me alone.”

As the man reached down to grab the keys, the woman saw her opportunity. She spun around and took off, running as fast as she could towards the hospital entrance, screaming at the top of her lungs for help. Three quick gunshots rang out behind her but miraculously, none of the bullets found their target. Hospital security guards who had heard the commotion came rushing out and saw the armed man jump into the driver’s seat of the woman’s car and speed off.

Police were immediately called and arrived within minutes to get the victim’s statement. They got the stolen vehicle’s make, model, color and license plate number to put out an alert. According to the victim, the traumatic encounter lasted no more than two minutes, but it was, without a doubt, the most terrifying two minutes of her life. “I really thought I was going to die right there,” she told police.

As of now the carjacker remains at large. The police investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about this crime is urged to call the Baltimore Police Department or 911 immediately. The victim’s stolen car has not yet been recovered. This is yet another example of the increase in violent carjackings plaguing Baltimore and serves as an important.
