North Baltimore car crash leaves one person dead, one person critically injured

On December 1st, 2023 at approximately 5:30 PM, a two-vehicle crash occurred on I-95 North near the Exit 74 off-ramp in North Baltimore, Maryland. According to the Maryland State Police, a northbound red sedan lost control and crossed the median into oncoming southbound traffic. The sedan collided head-on with a white SUV.

Details of the crash

The driver of the sedan, a 30-year old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver of the SUV, a 45-year old female, was transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore in critical condition. No other vehicles were involved in the initial collision.

Road closures and investigation

As a result of the crash, I-95 North was shut down for over three hours between Exits 74 and 78 as police and emergency crews responded. The Maryland Department of Transportation also reported backups of over 10 miles during the evening commute. An investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing by the Maryland State Police crash reconstruction unit. Speed and driver impairment do not appear to be factors, though further toxicology results are pending.

Similar accidents in the area

Unfortunately, this is not the first serious accident to occur on this stretch of I-95 in recent months. Last month, a multi-vehicle pileup on I-95 South near Exit 78 killed two people and injured several others. Road conditions and design may contribute to accidents on this busy interstate according to some experts. The Maryland State Highway Administration has announced plans to study safety improvements for this section of I-95.

Conclusion

In summary, a deadly head-on collision on I-95 North in North Baltimore last night left one person dead and another critically injured. The highway was shut down for several hours during the investigation and cleanup.
