Guatemalans President Elections 2023

On June 25, 2023, Guatemalans went to the polls to vote for a new president. The election was hotly contested, with concerns over corruption and the cost of living dominating the campaigns.

Despite the many candidates, no clear favorite emerged, and the polls are expected to result in a second-round run-off. The winner will take office next January, succeeding current President Alejandro Giammattei.

In addition to the presidential election, Guatemalans also voted for a new vice president, filling all congressional seats and hundreds of local posts.

The election comes after a tumultuous electoral season in Guatemala, with many opposition candidates eliminated. Observers say voter apathy was rising, with many citizens disillusioned with the political system.

The new president will face significant challenges in addressing corruption and improving the standard of living for Guatemalans. The country has struggled with poverty, crime, and political instability recently.

Overall, the election marks an important moment for Guatemala, as citizens choose their next leader and determine the country’s direction for the years to come.
