Gauteng Sports Awards Open for Nominations
Gauteng residents and sports federations are encouraged to submit their nominations for the 2022 Gauteng Sports Awards. The prestigious awards are now in their 11th year and aim to recognize the achievements of athletes, coaches, and administrators in the province.
The awards ceremony, which will take place later this year, will see winners in 20 categories receive recognition for their contributions to the sports industry. The categories include Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Administrator of the Year.
Nominations for the awards opened on September 1st and will close on September 16th at 16:00. The nominees must be Gauteng-based, and the nominator must provide a detailed motivation for why the nominee deserves to win the award.
MEC Mbali Hlophe, the Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, launched the awards earlier this year. She said the awards are an opportunity to celebrate the province’s sporting talent and inspire the next generation of athletes.
“The Gauteng Sports Awards are a platform for us to acknowledge and celebrate the sporting talent in our province, and to inspire the next generation of athletes. We are looking forward to receiving nominations and recognizing the achievements of our sporting heroes,” Hlophe said.
The awards ceremony will take place on a date to be confirmed later this year. The event will be attended by sports personalities, government officials, and members of the public.
Previous Winners of the Gauteng Sports Awards
Previous winners of the Gauteng Sports Awards include some of the province’s most prominent sports personalities. In 2019, Olympic champion Caster Semenya won the Sportswoman of the Year award, while former Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter won the Coach of the Year award.
Other winners in 2019 included the Lions Rugby team, who won the Team of the Year award, and the University of Johannesburg’s sports director, Nomsa Mahlangu, who won the Administrator of the Year award.
