1 dead, 9 injured after wrong-way vehicle crash on Maryland highway, police say

One person has died and nine others have been injured after a wrong-way vehicle crash on a Maryland highway, according to police. The incident occurred on August 4th, 2023, on Route 50 near Annapolis.

According to Maryland State Police, a vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lanes of Route 50 when it collided head-on with another vehicle. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and eight passengers in the other vehicle were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

The westbound lanes of Route 50 were closed for several hours as police investigated the scene and cleared the wreckage. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police say that alcohol and drugs may have been a factor.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” said Maryland State Police Superintendent Woodrow Jones III in a statement. “We urge all drivers to be vigilant and responsible on our roadways, especially when it comes to driving under the influence.”

The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of their families. Maryland State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to come forward.
