After the death of his patient, Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore), the protagonist and titular character, is stunned. He wasn’t expecting this to happen—especially as he was so sure that everything would be all right if they just followed the doctor’s orders.

It seems that the doctors were wrong once again in their diagnosis! This makes it more difficult for Shaun to regain focus on what really matters: the lives of the patients who need him most. As things go from bad to worse at San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital, Dr. Glassman faces a dilemma that will test not only his own patients but also those around him including Dr. Claire Browne who is grieving over her daughter’s disappearance; Dr. Aaron Glassman who is the head of the hospital and Shaun’s boss; Dr. Morgan Reznick, a doctor at the hospital with whom Shaun has had a difficult relationship in the past.

The Storyline:

This season will focus primarily on three storylines that have been developing throughout the seasons with some overlap from previous episodes as well as introducing a few more plots to be explored later this season.

These are the continuing story arcs involving patient relationships like Oliver Davis’s (played by Ian Chen) struggle with mental health issues following his father’s death last season as well the complications of raising a baby with two moms like the ongoing storyline following the relationship between Maura (played by Amy Okuda) and her new wife, Hannah Miller (played by Paige Spara).

The ambitious plan for the surgical robotics project at the hospital spearheaded by Dr. Morgan Reznick; and finally, Shaun’s own personal story arc that will be developing throughout the season involving his work in private practice while also continuing to deal with professional issues within San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital.
