Manitoba Developmental Centre Class Action Settlement Approved

The court has approved a settlement of $17 million for the class action lawsuit involving former residents of the Manitoba Developmental Centre, a home for people with developmental disabilities. This settlement was reached after the plaintiffs alleged that the staff at the center had beaten them and condoned abuse.

The Manitoba government agreed to pay the settlement amount and apologize in the legislature in March 2023 to settle the lawsuit pending court approval. Koskie Minsky LLP, the law firm representing residents in the suit, announced the approval on Friday.

According to the law firm, the settlement will be distributed among the approximately 200 residents in the class action lawsuit. The settlement will compensate the residents for their abuse and mistreatment while living at the center.

The plaintiffs claimed that the staff at the Manitoba Developmental Centre had beaten them, condoned abuse, and subjected them to inhumane living conditions. The lawsuit was filed in 2017 and alleged that the residents had suffered physical, sexual, and emotional abuse at the hands of the staff.

The settlement will bring some closure to the residents who have suffered for years. The Manitoba Developmental Centre was closed in 2018, and the residents have since been moved to other facilities.

This settlement is an important step in ensuring that the rights of people with developmental disabilities are protected and that they receive the care and support they need. The settlement sends a message to all facilities that care for people with developmental disabilities that abuse and mistreatment will not be tolerated.

Other Recent Class Action Settlements

The $17 million settlement for the Manitoba Developmental Centre is one of several recent class action settlements in Canada. In one settlement, Humana home health workers who claimed they were not properly compensated for overtime hours under federal law between January 1, 2015, and October 12, 2015, may be eligible to benefit from a $17 million class action settlement.you can check here.
