Prince Georgians Encouraged To Recycle Their Christmas Trees

Prince George’s County Department of the Environment (DoE) announces Christmas tree recycling services for all county residents. The service is provided for free of charge and scheduled to run from December 26, 2016 through January 30, 2017. All residents are encouraged to recycle their Christmas tree, along with their gift bags, wrapping and tissue paper and holiday cards. All materials will need to be placed at curbside by 6:30 a.m. on the day reserved for their regular collection.Only live trees accepted, without stands and decorations. The resident must also remove plastic and metal materials from the tree. Residents are encouraged to donate their usable artificial trees to charity or thrift stores.

“As we focus on ways to be more sustainable and thoughtful about how we treat the environment this holiday season, County residents can do their part to keep materials that can be reused, recycled and repurposed from going to the landfill. Christmas trees are a great example of an organic material that was once thrown away, but is now collected for recycling. Each year the County produces 2,000 tons of mulch which is shared with County residents for free during our annual Mulch Madness giveaway event in April and used for landscaping throughout the County,” said DoE Director Adam Ortiz.

Residential holiday string lights and Christmas trees may also be dropped off for recycling at R3 Services (see below for address) Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. Commercial string lights and other decorations are not accepted.
