Acting U.S. Attorney Rick A. Mountcastle announced Tuesday a Virginia tax preparer was sentenced to 30 months in prison for aiding and assisting in the preparation of fraudulent tax returns.
Forty-nine-year-old Timothy Harris of Danville owned and operated TNT Tax Services and TNA Tax Services in Rocky Mount and Danville. Harris prepared fraudulent tax returns for several clients. The returns claimed false business losses, resulting in clients receiving refunds that were not entitled to them, according to court documents.
The Internal Revenue Service issued Harris an Electronic Filing Identification number in December 2012. Instead of utilizing that EFIN to file tax returns, he utilized another EFIN that belonged to someone else. He admitted to causing a tax loss of over $250,000.
In addition to the 30-month prison sentence, Harris was ordered to pay $335,389 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
