Maryland State Delegate Indicted With Federal Wire Fraud Charge

Greenbelt, Maryland – 67-year-old Tawanna P. Gaines of Berwyn Heights, Maryland has been charged with one count of federal wire fraud. The criminal information explains that Gaines was a Maryland State Delegate from December 2001 through the present. She represented District 22 which covers portions of Prince George’s County.

During her tenure in the House of Delegates, Gaines held many committee assignments including Assistant Majority Leader and vice-chair of Appropriations Committee. From 2002 to present, The candidate committee “Friends of Tawanna P. Gaines” (FTPG) served as the finance entity for the Gaines campaign for Maryland State Delegate.

FTPG was regulated by the state election campaign committee and had a designated bank account. Gaines maintained exclusive control over a PayPal account used to accept electronic donations to FTPG. That account and those donations were not disclosed in State campaign finance fillings.

The criminal information alleges that Gaines defrauded the campaign and its contributors of more than $22,000 from at least January of 2015 through April of 2018. If convicted, Gaines will face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for wire fraud.

At this point in time, Tawanna P. Gaines is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Further details have been made available here.
