Maryland Man Struck And Killed By Vehicle In Hagerstown


The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says a man was fatally injured after being struck by a vehicle in Hagerstown, according to the news release.

Approximately 8:23 p.m. Saturday, deputies were dispatched to the 13400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue to investigate a report of a suspicious person. At the scene, the deputies observed a man with two dogs who had allegedly walked in front and knocked on the door of a nearby residence.

Accident Scene

Deputies approached the man who admitted to being at the residence, but said he did not commit a crime. The deputies let the man go and ordered him not to return to the residence.

At 8:46 p.m. the man was walking south on the southbound shoulder of Pennsylvania Avenue, with his two dogs. A short time later, a mini van struck one of the man’s dogs in front of Burkholder’s Flooring at 13412 Pennsylvania Avenue. The man immediately ran into the roadway to check on the dog. The man refused to heed to the deputies orders to stay out of the road and was struck by a vehicle traveling in the northbound lane.

The man was identified as 49-year-old Clifford Lee Staley of not fixed address. He was taken to Meritus Medical Center, where he pronounced deceased Sunday.
