McEachern faces Round 2 of a back-to-back Gwinnett gauntlet to open the season with hopes of a better result this week. The Indians showed well on defense last week in a loss to North Gwinnett, but surrendered two interceptions for touchdowns that caused the score to get out of hand.
Their task doesn’t get easier Friday against powerhouse Grayson, which is 4-0 all-time against McEachern.
The Rams got bad news on quarterback Carlos Del Rio — a McEachern transfer — who said on social media that his eligibility for this season had been denied by the Georgia High School Association. With Del Rio out in the opener, De’yon Cannon stepped up and completed 13 of 18 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Jamal Haynes had five catches for 149 yards and two scores to lead his receivers.
Garrett Brophy (91 percent blocking grade, three pancake blocks) and Tyzen Wilkerson (91 percent blocking grade, four pancake blocks) played well on the offensive line.
The Grayson defense had a great night at Jones County, too. Jibrahn Claude led the way with a pair of interceptions, and Marsyas Fox had an interception and a TD. Grady Bryant (seven tackles, three for losses) and Jaidyn Hicks (four tackles, two for losses, one sack) also stood out on the Rams’ defense.
