Early life and education

Tom Hollander was born in Bristol, England, the son of teachers, and was brought up in Oxford. He was educated at Abingdon School and St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he read History. Whilst at Cambridge he wrote comedy for the university magazine and performed in a number of University Footlights Club revues, including one directed by future Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid.

He first rose to prominence in the early 2000s with a string of roles in high-profile films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Gosford Park and Pride & Prejudice. Tom Hollander (born 25 August 1967) is an English actor and screenwriter. He first came to prominence in the UK with a leading role in the British drama TV film Our Mutual Friend (1998) and as Geoffrey Chaucer in the historical medical drama Les Lavigueur: Une vie à t’attendre (2000). Hollander had supporting roles in films including Enigma (2001), Gosford Park (2001), Cambridge Spies (2003), Pride & Prejudice (2005), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) and In the Loop (2009).

Hollander has appeared as Colonel G. A. Loder in the Quartermaine’s Terms episode “One of Us” and as Georgie Bottger in an episode of Foyle’s War. He played Mr. Collins in two episodes of the ITV period drama Downton Abbey. In 2012, he also played MP/ Parliamentary whip Peter Mannion in The Thick of It and recurred as Captain Ryan Hanson in Spies of Warsaw.
