Terry Thompson, a longtime Howard County firefighter who worked through the ranks in Maryland emergency services, has died.

Thompson, who was 57, passed away on June 6, 2023, following a battle with cancer. He had been with the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services for over 30 years.

Thompson began his career as a volunteer firefighter in Howard County before joining the department full-time in 1990. Over the years, he worked his way up through the ranks, serving as a firefighter, paramedic, and lieutenant before being promoted to captain in 2001.

In 2014, Thompson was appointed as the department’s deputy chief of operations, overseeing the day-to-day activities of the department’s firefighters and paramedics.

Thompson was known for his dedication to his work and his commitment to the safety of his fellow firefighters and the residents of Howard County. He was also an active member of the community, volunteering his time with various organizations and serving as a mentor to young people interested in emergency services.

In a statement, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball praised Thompson’s contributions to the community. “Terry was a dedicated public servant who spent his life serving others,” Ball said. “He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”
