Temple University Student From Bowie Fatally Shot By Police On South Beach

Miami-Date Police say a Bowie woman was fatally shot Sunday after she plowed her vehicle through heavily crowded streets on South Beach. The Temple University student was driving a BMW at a high rate of speed for several blocks, before hitting Miami Beach officer David Cajuso, a two-year veteran with the Miami Beach Police Department.

Accident Scene

The Miami Herald reports the woman identified as Cariann Hithon, 22, of Bowie, Maryland smashed her BMW into two vehicles, while patrons at a nearby diner watched in horror. She sped through a red light on 12th Street at Collins Avenue and struck a retired homicide detective who was driving a Mercedes Benz. After speeding into a crowd and hitting Cajuso, another cop intervened by opening fire on the BMW.

Police believe Hithon was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident. Cajuso was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was released Monday and is recovering at home, according to the report.
