The Office of the State’s Attorney released a statement today, saying a violent repeat offender was sentenced to 25 years in prison for robbing a vulnerable female adult.
Twenty-six-year-old Wayne Bell was found guilty of robbing a 79-year-old female and second-degree assault of another person.
The victim was robbed on September 23, 2016 shortly after leaving the Charles Theater. Bell approached the victim in the 100 unit block of East Lanvale Street and grabbed her purse, while she struggled to hold on. After stealing the purse, he fled toward the 100 unit block of East Lafayette Street.
A good Samaritan who witnessed the incident unfold, found Bell rummaging through the victim’s purse. He approached and asked him why he robbed the woman of her purse. He denied the allegations and said it was “his girl’s” purse. He then punched the man in his face. With the help of two bystanders, Bell was restrained until Baltimore Police arrived.
“This is an incredible story of selflessness and bravery, and demonstrates how law enforcement and the community are key to maintaining public safety,” State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said in a statement.
