The first season snowfall hits Midwest on Friday, with 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts. Norfolk, Columbus, and Sioux City areas received 1 to 2 inches of snow, while some locations in north-central Nebraska reported up to 6 inches.
Winter season is just around the corner and Prince George’s County is already taking the steps to ensure residents have a warm place to stay. Bitter cold weather is associated with mortality and morbidity, due to hypothermia and exacerbation of preexisting chronic illness such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Senior citizens, infants and homeless persons are at an increased risk.
A study released in 2015, by the National Center for Health Statistics found that cold kills twice as many Americans as heat (NCHS). Twelve warming centers has been selected by the Prince George’s County Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission working jointly with the Office of Emergency Management. The warming centers will offer residents refuge during periods of extreme cold weather.
