Maryland State Police Rescue Injured Hiker In Catoctin Mountain Park

Maryland State Police partnered with first responders from Frederick County Fire and Rescue to conduct an aerial rescue in Frederick County Sunday.

A 48-year-old man hiking near Chimney Rock Sunday fell 30 feet below into a crevice. Due to injuries sustained during the fall local law enforcement, EMS and fire officials had to be dispatched to the park. At the scene, rescue personnel determined that the conditions were too treacherous to extract the man from the crevice.

A Maryland State Police AW-139 helicopter was positioned 100 feet about the embankment. A trooper was lowered to the scene to help with patient packaging, according to the news release. The man was hoisted into the helicopter and transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for treatment.

Utilizing the helicopter, rescuers were able to rescue the man within 12 minutes, according to the news release.
