Maryland Gears Up For Tax-Free Week

July has officially ended and August is now on the calendar. Maryland residents will realize what that means. In less than two weeks, Maryland’s tax-free week will be here. Each year, the state of Maryland celebrates the start of the “Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week” on the second Sunday of August. For the entire week, Maryland shoppers will be able to purchase certain clothing and footwear items without being forced to pay a sales tax.

The items must qualify and they must cost $100 or less. As long as they fit into this threshold, shoppers will be able to void that annoying 6% sales tax. The tax-free week will start on August the 13th and run through the 19th. There is one minor change this year. Certain backpack and book bag purchases will also qualify for tax-free status. The first $40 on backpack purchases will be completely tax free. Simultaneously, the Maryland Retailer’s Association is holding a contest for college students. Students are encouraged to snap images of their brand-new, tax-free items along with a snarky, creative caption. The Association gives away various prizes, including a $1,500 and $500 scholarship!
