Maryland Democrats bill blocked 25 people

The Democrats of Maryland are pushing a bill under state legislation to prevent anyone under 25 years from being charged with felony murder. Democratic Del. Charlotte Churchfield introduced would prohibit a person below the age of 25 from the Maryland General Assembly the Youth Accountability and Safety Act. The individual was restricted for holding an offense from being convicted of first-degree murder under the felony murder provisions in the state. Murder used to be classified in the first degree under those provisions or even attempted perpetration of several specified crimes, such as rape, arson, robbery, burglary, carjacking, and other serious offenses. However, Churchfield gave a proposal supporting multiple Democratic co-sponsors stating that everyone trying to commit one of those crimes under 25 years won’t be charged with first-degree murder. This crime carries life imprisonment with or without the possibility of parole in Maryland.

The bill is now being called a lightning rod. The critics are now arguing the effects of such a proposal for becoming law and that it might be devastating. Republican Del. Susan McComas said, “If this bill passes, you’re going to have kingpins, you’re going to have gangs use juveniles to do their dirty work.”

Law enforcement officials expressing their sentiments

Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said, “The solution is not changing the law to excuse or to make excuses for the violator.” He added, “The process that needs to be in place is holding that person accountable.” Maury Richards, a law enforcement expert and former police chief in Martinsburg, W.Va., stated that “a crime wave of violence going on right now,” but “we’re hung up on whether 25-year-olds should be charged with murder.”
