A man wielding a machete was killed in a police-involved shooting in Randallstown. A Baltimore County Police Officer was investigating an automobile collision in the parking lot near the Aldi store at the Liberty Court Shopping Center around 4:17 PM. She was approached by an employee of Dollar Tree.
The employee pointed out a shoplifting suspect. The officer attempted to confront the suspect, but they walked away from her towards the direction of Old Court Road. On Old Court Road, the female officer tried to verbally stop the suspect several times. The suspect refused and continued walking away down the middle of the road.
More officers arrived and attempted to help stop the suspect. At this point, the suspect began to flee from officers. An officer grabbed the suspect’s arm. The suspect pulled a machete from under his jacket and swung it at the officer. The suspect fled to the shopping center and entered the Aldi store. He was followed by officers who maintained a safe distance.
The suspect was ordered to drop the weapon. Instead, he continued advancing towards the officers until they were pinned against a wall near the store’s entrance. Two officers fired their weapons and the suspect was struck at least once in the upper body. The machete was retrieved and the suspect received aid. Body-camera video of the incident was captured.
It will be made available to the State’s Attorney’s Office at a later time. The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Emanuel David Joshua Oates. He died as a result of his injuries.
