Animas Corp., a division of Johnson & Johnson, will close its West Chester, Pennsylvania facility and lay off 297 employees, according to a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry earlier this week.
The decision to close its plant at 200 Lawrence Drive comes as the company takes the step to exit the insulin pump business. Animas Vibe and OneTouch Ping insulin pumps are produced in the plant, which is expected to close on December 15.
The Business Journal reports Animas will work with Minneapolis-based Medtronic to “facilitate a seamless transition for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers.” About 90,000 people with diabetes utilizing Animas insulin pumps will be offered the option to transfer to a Medtronic pump.
The employees impacted by the closure are expected to separate on December 15.
