Eastern Shore is a tiny town located on the Maryland and Delaware border, with a population of about 150. On Tuesday, Marydel’s former mayor was given a 9-year prison sentence for taking over $61,000 from the town between 2012 and 2016.
Former Mayor Deborah Rowe pleaded guilty to misconduct in office, forgery and theft scheme on February 1. She was given three years for each charge.
According to court documents, Rowe admitted to obtaining a debit card in the town’s name to pay taxes on property located in North Carolina and bills. She also admits to transferring money from the town’s funds to a personal bank account and forging the town commissioners’ signatures on checks.
Rowe issued a letter of apology and a restitution check for $61,660.07 to the citizens of Marydel.
