Houston-based Direct Energy announced on Tuesday a layoff that would affect 108 employees in Columbia.
The electricity and natural gas retailer is amid “changing its business model to move away from being a residential solar installer,” which prompted the decision to layoff part its workforce.
The company said it would continue to offer maintenance for solar power systems installed on existing customers’ homes.
The new focus will be the development of residential solar solutions, such as community solar and energy storage. The company will continue working towards building its commercial solar business in the process,” the company said in a statement.
The 6,200 workers employed by Direct Energy are located throughout the country.
The statement said layoffs are expected to begin no later than September.
