Cinemavilla 2021: The Pirating of Digital Content in India

India is a country of 1.3 billion people, the third largest in population and second largest in area. The Cinemavilla 2021: Pirating of Digital Content in India study was conducted by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) with assistance from Media Partners Asia for FICCI-Frames 2012, on behalf of MPA-IAMAI Task Force on Piracy and Counterfeiting.

The Cinemavilla 2021: Pirating of Digital Content in India research found that about 90% of all video content consumed by Indians is pirated or copied illegally. This has had a significant impact on both legitimate businesses and consumers who are increasingly accessing their entertainment through illegal channels rather than paying for it legally.

The Cinemavilla 2021: Pirating of Digital Content in India study also found that almost a quarter (24.41%) of all Indians who are consuming pirated content were doing so because they felt it was more convenient to access and cheaper than the legal alternatives. Even though there is widespread awareness about piracy among Indian consumers, there has been minimal effort from either Government or private players to create an environment where legitimate digital video consumption can thrive and grow. 5. With piracy being so prevalent in India, there are no consequences for those who do it
  6. It’s unclear how the government will deal with this problem when they take office next year

In the not-so-distant future, India will be home to one of the largest pirating markets in the world. As digital content becomes more and more available, it also becomes more accessible for people in developing countries to pirate this content. This post explores how piracy is a problem that should be addressed now before it gets even worse.

The pirating market in India is booming as digital downloads become more commonplace and access to fast internet connections grows exponentially at cheaper rates. Piracy has been around for years, but it has never been easier or cheaper to get your hands on illegal copies of movies and TV shows than ever before!

A study of the piracy rates in India shows that for every movie, there are 7.5 illegal downloads or streams. This is a significant issue because it’s depriving the film industry of revenue, which could be used to produce new content and pay those who create it. It also has an impact on people everywhere as they’re unable to access certain films due to geographical restrictions imposed by distributors.
