Maryland’s Department of Human Services misspent approximately $5 million and mishandled state contracts.
A state audit has found that DHS misspent millions of dollars in state funds on legal fees, an IT project and an emergency shelter renovation project that was still not completed after 19 months.
The Baltimore Sun reports that two out of eight law firms providing legal services to neglected children were overpaid by $616,000. The overpayment was due to contracts that promised a minimum amount of compensation.
The agency paid a contractor $300,000 upfront to renovate an emergency shelter. It was determined that the work had still not been done 19 months after the payment was made.
On August 18, Molly McGrath Tierney resigned as director of the Baltimore City Department of Social Services.
