Posture: Up Close

It’s great that you’re willing to learn how to improve back posture. You’re taking the first step toward better health and well-being.

But it’s important to mention that there is a lot more to having good posture than just standing tall. You need to improve your posture so that you will have a healthier body long-term. If you take care of your back now, it’s more likely to take care of you when you’re older.

Types of Posture

There is more than one type of posture that everyone needs to know about. Specifically, there are two posture types, which include:

Static Posture: This is your posture when you aren’t moving, hence the name. So whenever you are sitting at a desk, for example, you are exhibiting static posture. It’s important that you work on your static posture, as it will help reduce back pain and other similar ailments.

Dynamic Posture: And just the opposite is dynamic posture, which is your posture whenever you are moving, such as walking or running. Your dynamic posture is just as important as your static posture. Holding the wrong posture can put you at risk of injury while your body is in motion.

Now that you know the difference between posture types, it’s time to move on to ways you can improve your back posture.

Keep Your Posture in Check

This means regularly paying attention to your posture all throughout the day. As stated above, your posture is incredibly important for a variety of reasons. Improper posture can promptly result in injuries, pain, and discomfort.

Understandably, it can be a challenge trying to stay on top of your posture, especially when you get busy. Thankfully, there are tools available that will help you with this.

Invest in a Lumbar Support Cushion

Many people sit for hours at a time, whether it’s due to a job or just watching TV and relaxing. With the help of a lumbar support pillow, you can be sure to keep your posture in check. Support cushions like this play a big role in keeping your back straight.

If you have a job that requires you to sit at a desk for eight hours out of the day, a lumbar support cushion and/or seat cushion is an absolute must.

Get Plenty of Exercise

You undoubtedly have trouble getting the movement your body needs to stay loose when you’re stuck at a desk throughout the week. But you can help break up the monotony by taking a short walk on your lunch break (as well as periodically during the day if your workplace allows it).

Doing so will help keep your posture in line. In fact, any exercise will benefit your posture. If you’re able to attend a yoga class in your spare time, you’ll find that it can help you stand up straighter, thereby limiting back pain and discomfort.

When you’re at home, try to focus on strengthening your core. These are the muscles located around your pelvis, back, and abdomen. A stronger core promotes better posture, so do your best to make these muscles stronger as much as possible.

Check Your Work Station’s Height

Does your computer monitor’s height cause you to have to look up or down to get a good view of it? This is a clear indication that your workstation isn’t at an optimal height for you. As such, you should make the necessary adjustments to ensure a clear, direct viewing angle.

In doing so, it will help adjust your posture to its natural level so that you sit (or stand) without slouching or straining your body.

Excellent Posture = A Healthier You

When you take steps to improve your posture, you will see a wealth of benefits that help you feel your best. You can start making adjustments right now to improve your back posture, whether it’s at home or at the office.

When you do, you can effectively prevent back problems and ensure that you function at your highest level.
