Once a couple agrees to marry, the wedding preparations begin. The wedding day will be the most memorable event of the couple’s lifetime. The highlights of the event will be shared with children, grandchildren, and great children as time passes by. This is why it is so important to plan your wedding with the utmost care and encourage immediate family member involvement. During this period, the couple should take time to enjoy each other frequently in a quiet, romantic environment. After the honeymoon, it will be time for the couple to begin their journey together and see where life takes them.
One of the first tasks that couples must undertake is applying for a marriage license. While, this process does not seem like a big deal it truly is, because it strengthens the commitment to join together in unity. A marriage license plays a huge role in a wedding, since it is the primary element that legalizes the wedding ceremony.
Applying for a marriage license in Prince George’s County, Maryland is very simple. All you need to do is appear in person (one or both parties) at the Clerk of the Circuit Court (see below for physical address), with the appropriate documents that will legally verify your identity. The following documents will be accepted:
- Birth certificate
- S. passport
- Military identification card
- Driver’s license
- Alien registration card
One or both parties will also need to provide the following under oath:
- Permanent physical address
- Full name
- Country or state of birth
- Social Security number (foreign nationals that do not have a SSN will be required to sign an affidavit)
- Martial status (if applicant has previously been married, the official date of divorce will be required)
A complete date of death is also a requirement for widowed applicants. Individuals between the ages of 15-17 may not marry without the consent of a parent or guardian. There are two exceptions to this rule. The female must be pregnant and be able to present a certified letter endorsed by a licensed physician. The female may also have given birth to a child.
A $70 license fee is due at the time of application only credit card, money order, and cash payments are accepted. It is important to note that there is a waiting period of 48 hours, before the marriage license can be utilized. It also has an expiration date of 6 months. If the original license is lost or stolen within 6 months of the effective date, couples can apply for a replacement for a $10 fee.

Civil ceremonies are also performed by a member of the clergy at the request of the couple. One or both parties must take the marriage license to the clergy, before the wedding day. The clergy will return the completed document back to the couple after the ceremony. No appointments are necessary, but couple must appear in person Mon-Fri between 9am-12pm. A $25 fee is due prior to the civil ceremony, form of payments accepted are cash, money order, and credit card.
Non-residents of Maryland may apply for a marriage license in person or by mail. The Non-Resident Application form must be obtained from the Circuit Court Clerk’s office in the county, where the marriage is to take place. The application must be given to the Clerk of a Court, Prothonotary, or Recorder of Deeds in the county, where the couple resides. The official will sign, seal, and mail the application to the Prince George’s County Courthouse. A license fee will be due at the time of application, but the only form of payments accepted are money orders and certified checks.
