Off-Duty State Trooper Intervenes In Gunfight In Salisbury, 2 Men Fatally Shot

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, two Maryland State Police troopers were working security at a Denny’s restaurant in Salisbury, when a gunfight erupted in the parking lot. The deceased has been identified as Jaquan M. Griffin, 21, and Michael T. Ward, 27, both of Salisbury.

As one of the troopers contacted the Salisbury Police Department, the other exited the restaurant and walked toward the crowd. The seven-year veteran saw what appeared to be Ward firing a handgun, State police said. Ward started firing in the direction of the trooper, forcing the trooper to return fire.

A few minutes had passed and Griffin entered the Denny’s restaurant and fell to the floor, police said.

Police believe Ward shot and killed Griffin, but they do not know whether the trooper or Griffin fatally wounded Ward. Since a trooper was involved, Internal Affairs opened an investigation into the incident.

No other injuries were reported.
