Increase In Organ Donations Is Contributed To Increase In Opioids Deaths

According to the Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland the number of organ donation and transplants spiked in 2016 throughout the nation. The nonprofit group oversees organ donation in Maryland. A record number of transplants of also reported by the United Network for Organ Sharing.

Organ transplants increased by 25 percent in Maryland alone, with 467 recipients receiving organs from 188 donors. Over 33,600 transplants were performed in 2016.

Officials contribute the growth on the compassion and generosity of families and donors, along with the increase in fatal opioid overdoses. In Maryland, the number of donors who died of an overdose nearly doubled in the past year. In 2015, one of six donors died of an overdose, which increased up to one in four in 2016.

The number of donors nationally, increased from one in 11 to one in eight.
