Havre De Grace Opera House Reopens In Harford County, Gets A New Identity

The Havre de Grace celebrated the reopening of the Havre de Grace Opera House Saturday after three years of being nonoperational. The historic opera house, built in 1870, underwent an 8-year $4 million renovation and was renamed The Cultural Center at the Opera House.

The now 21st-century building will feature concerts, art shows and plays for just a little over 200 people. Havre de Grace Arts Collective expects the opera house to draw 20,000 patrons annually.

A 2016 public vote authorized the city to issue more than $2 million in bonds to complete the financing for the renovation. The foundation raised $1.8 million and the county, state and city chipped in to cover the remaining costs.

The building was previously utilized for educational, cultural and political purposes, all combined under the same roof. The main floor served as a city hall, library and school, while the remaining floors provided space for theater performances. In the 1920s, the third floor was lost to a fire.
