U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced Wednesday that a Capitol Heights man pleaded guilty to a felony charge of sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl. The charge stems back to numerous sexual assaults that took place in 2005.
Fifty-year-old Mandell L. Whitted was employed as a janitor at J.C. Nalle Elementary School in Southeast Washington in 2005, when the alleged assault took place. The girl was part of a cleaning crew during the summer of her fifth grade at J.C. Nalle. She also worked on a cleaning crew during the summer of her sixth grade at another school, according to court documents.
Between May 2005 and November 2005, Whitted sexually assaulted the victim on several occasions at different locations. On one occasion, he assaulted the girl in the janitor’s office, according to court documents.
The Metropolitan Police Department arrested Whitted in February 2017.
