Baltimore is one of the worst U.S. cities to live in, according to a new survey by 24/7 Wall Street. In fact, Baltimore is being called “one of the most dangerous cities in the United States.”
Baltimore ranked no. 14 on the 50 Worst American Cities To Live In survey.
Detroit, Michigan was ranked No. 1 followed by Birmingham, Alabama; Flint, Michigan; St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee, rounding out the top five.
The cities’ rankings were based on crime rate, poverty rate, employment growth, educational attainment, housing affordability, access to attractions and restaurants and other factors. Approximately 22.9 percent of Baltimore’s population (621,849) lives below the poverty line. The city’s poverty rate is more than double the state’s poverty rate of 9.7 percent. There were 1,536 crimes committed in Baltimore for every 100,000 residents in 2015. Both of those factors, along with others are the reason for Baltimore’s ranking.
According to the survey, Baltimore’s 2015 high violent crime rate was partially fueled by the unrest following the death of Freddie Gray and the looting of pharmacies, causing an influx of drugs to be introduced to the street.
All of the cities included in the survey had a population of 65,000 or more.
